After returning home to New York City from a vacation in Northern California, Kimberly Tate-Brown, MS, NPP, learned on her answering machine that she would soon be "on the road again" as the winner of NurseZone's one-night stay for two giveaway at the Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon, Virginia.
But it's no ordinary inn. According to legend, the inn continues to be haunted by Beth Ann Smith-a nurse during the Civil War-nearly 140 years after her death.
"I was very excited to win," said Tate-Brown. "I've always been a paranormal enthusiast so the more ghosts the better."
She added, "I haven't seen any ghosts yet, but I've always wanted to stay somewhere where there were reports of ghost sightings." She'll likely be taking her trip in the next three months.
Tate-Brown, who has been a nurse for 14 years, currently works at Columbia University's New York State Psychiatric Institute as a research coordinator. She also is president of the New York Network of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses in Psychiatric Mental Health, which works in collaboration with several New York universities' divisions of nursing and pharmaceutical companies, providing educational opportunities for nurses and instructing people on disorders and medications, while also promoting nursing.
"There are so many different opportunities and areas of nursing," she said. "The sky's the limit."
